Australian debt guide

Will a debt collector affect my credit report?

By DebtReply · Sources checked

Short answer

Collection contact and your credit report are different things. Moneysmart explains that credit reports can include payment history and defaults. Check your own reports instead of assuming what a letter means for them. If an entry is wrong, you can request a correction for free; accurate negative information is different.

What should I check first?

Moneysmart’s credit-report guide explains how to get a report and review it. Check the account, provider and balance against your records. A collector’s reference may differ from the original account number, so keep both with your notes. The guide also explains that agencies can hold different information.

What if an entry looks wrong?

Use a separate note for each possible error: what the report says, what you believe is correct, and which document supports your view. Moneysmart’s credit-repair guidance explains free correction requests to the provider or reporting agency. Our debt-dispute letter concerns the claim; it is not a specialist credit-report correction form.

Can paying remove an accurate default?

Moneysmart distinguishes correcting an error from removing accurate negative information. Do not assume a payment or a paid credit-repair service will delete an entry. Read the sources below and ask for help if a promised outcome is unclear. Keep any written promise with the other account records.

What can I do next?

  1. Obtain your reports through the official routes linked by Moneysmart.
  2. List specific differences from your records.
  3. Gather supporting copies.
  4. Ask the relevant organisation about correction of the identified error.
  5. Keep a dated copy of the request and response.

Common questions

Does a collection call mean a new default has been listed?

Do not assume that from the call alone. Check your credit reports and the relevant account records.

Do I need to pay to ask for an error to be corrected?

Moneysmart says you can seek correction of errors for free.

Does DebtReply access my credit report?

No. DebtReply does not connect to credit reporting agencies or retrieve your records.
